What is Lip fillers?

Lip fillers are injections that give the lips a more plump and full appearance. The injections are composed mainly of hyaluronic acid. Sometimes lip Botox is done for a similar effect (Lip Flip), but that’s not considered a dermal filler.

The lip filler procedure takes about 30 minutes and is minimally invasive. However, the procedure is not permanent and you will need to get future injections to maintain a plump pout.

You might have swelling or tenderness and bruising after the procedure, though the side effects should be minor. Aftercare for lip fillers is manageable. If you’re unsure whether the procedure is right for you, it helps to be aware of what to expect during aftercare.

How do lip fillers work?

Lip Fillers

Lip fillers allow us to volumize lips that have gotten smaller due to the aging process. It also allows us to plump lips to give then a soft and subtle increase in size regardless of age.

Most modern lip fillers contain an ingredient known as hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that helps the body to retain water. When used in dermal fillers, hyaluronic acid can increase the volume of your lips, enhance the strength of your smile, eliminate any creases or fine lines that emerge around the corners of your mouth and add some much-needed plumpness and structure to lips that have begun to thin.

What to avoid?

Here are a few other things we recommend avoiding after your lip filler procedure:

  • Stop smoking
Smoking can increase the risk of infection, so it’s important not to smoke immediately after getting lip fillers.
  • Avoid Alcohol
Alcohol acts a blood thinner, and should be avoided for at least 24 hours after getting lip fillers. Alcohol can cause inflammation, increase the likelihood of bruising, and make swelling worse. It’s also a good idea to avoid alcohol a few days before your appointment.
  • Don’t fly
We recommend that you wait at least a week after your treatment before flying. This is because the air pressure in a plane can make swelling and bruising worse.

FAQ's

How long do lip fillers last?

Lip fillers last about 9-15 months, but results can vary depending on the patient. How long the lip filler last depends on how fast your metabolism is able to break the filler down. We recommend starting conservatively and building up for the effect you desire. This is because, as with anything, it is much easier to increase the volume gradually until you are pleased with the size.

How long does it take to get lip fillers?

The length of the treatment will depend on how much filler you need to achieve the look you desire. Appointment times should be around one hour, to make sure there is plenty of time to get you settled and make sure there is no rush and everything is done with precision. We also like to numb the area prior to the treatment.

Can You Sleep on Your Side After Lip Fillers?

It is best to sleep on your back for 24-48 hours after the lip filler procedure. Sleeping on your side may cause the filler to shift. We recommend keeping your head elevated on a few pillows to help with swelling. Ice can also be helpful.

Is It Good to Massage Your Lips After Fillers?

You don't need to massage your lips after the treatment. Applying any pressure to the injected lips may cause swelling and bruising. Ice is often helpful to assist with swelling and bruising.
