Blepharoplasty Surgery

Blepharoplasty refers to eyelid surgery which is designed to remove the excess fat, along with skin and muscle, from the upper and lower eyelids. It happens to also be regarded as one of the most common cosmetic procedure performed each year. Due to the natural course of aging, our lids tend to get heavier over time and can lead to functional issues such as vision concerns but also cosmetic concerns for many.

How is eyelid surgery performed?

Blepharoplasty Surgery

Your eyelid surgery will be performed in a hospital or outpatient surgery clinic. We generally make incisions on the upper eyelids or on the lower eyelids just below the lower eyelash line. Incisions made in the natural creases of your eyelids makes scarring less noticeable. In some cases we make an incision on the inside of the lower eyelid, called a transconjunctival incision.

Dr. Priti Patel will reposition or remove fat deposits, tighten muscles and tissues, and remove excess skin in the eyelids to give you a more awake and refreshed look. Small sutures are used to repair the incisions and the resulting scar is hardly noticeable.

Why it's done?

Blepharoplasty may be an option if you have:

  • Baggy or droopy upper eyelids
  • Excess skin of the upper eyelids that interferes with your peripheral vision
  • Excess skin on the lower eyelids
  • Bags under your eyes

What can be done for dark circles under my eyes?

Dark circles may be treated by lower eyelid surgery if it results from shadowing due to bulging fat or bags. If the dark circles result from pigmentation changes of eyelid skin, skin lightening creams or chemical peels may improve this condition. Lasers can also be used to resurface the area under the eyes for ideal results. Often these treatments are combined for the best results.

Who is a candidate for blepharoplasty?

A natural part of the aging process is the development of wrinkles, often around the eyes. Skin around the eyes also becomes less elastic, resulting in droopy eyelids. Sometimes this happens at an early age and runs in families due to hereditary traits. Commonly patients may use the forehead muscles harder in an effort to lift the drooping eyelids. This may cause brow aches and fatigue. If you are having these symptoms, or simply do not like the way your eyelids appear, you may be a candidate for a blepharoplasty.

What is the age limit to undergo eyelid surgery?

There is no correct age for obtaining eyelid surgery. Excessive skin in the upper lids, or bulging fat in the lower lids are commonly seen with signs of aging. General health status is used to determine if a patient is able to undergo procedures that require anesthesia. A medical clearance may be needed to make it as safe as possible to do cosmetic surgery.

Can you operate on only one eye?

Generally both eyes are treated at the same time, however, occasionally a patient may have drooping of just one side. We can do a full evaluation in the office to determine the best treatment for your care.
